A regular guest on Dallas community radio by 1990, G became a mix show DJ for 100.3 JAMZ FM in 1994. In 1998 he began producing live mixes on Dallas’s #1 station (K104) home of renowned DJ Greg Street. When Emmis Broadcasting created an Austin sister to legendary hip-hop stations Hot 97 (NY) and Power 106 (LA) in 2003, Baby G was tapped to be Hot 93’s Head Mix DJ. He is currently featured as a live mixer daily on the popular Hip-Hop Lunch Stop as well as 2 live nightclub broadcasts a week. More recently he was contracted by XM Satellite Radio to produce a weekly two-hour nationwide mix show, 360 (Ch. 67 The City), showcasing the hottest hip-hop, R&B, and dancehall reggae. The Austin Chronicle says of Baby G, “He is as comfortable playing classic breaks at a B-Boy gathering as he is blending commercial rap hits on Hot 93.3.” In fact, his repertoire is even more varied – how many hip-hop DJ’s can say they have opened for Tejano legend Selena, spun music at raves around the country, and attracted diverse crowds of 400+ people to reggae parties years before Sean Paul hit mainstream radio airwaves? Throughout his career, Baby G has remained committed to uncovering the newest music, be it a reggae artist from Killeen, TX or an underground Chicano MC from Los Angeles, and infusing it with the hottest commercial hits and classic old-school jams. The popularity of his club dates and radio shows attest to the fact that Baby G knows how to read his audience and deliver what they want. As he explains it, he “bridges the gap” – between local and national, underground and mainstream, classic and brand-new. With his trademark precision and versatility, G is currently balancing radio success with innovative musical collaborations. But at the end of the day, “the cut selecta” DJ Baby G will be known for what he sees as the heart of the DJ’s craft – “generating good vibes” while keeping the crowd moving, from the first song he spins to the last one of the night. - Words by Kiara Alvarez |
